I am linking up with the fabulous Mrs. Jump for her Ten Things I Want to Do This Summer linky party. School is “unofficially” over for me as my students’ last day was last Thursday. Our district tacked on two PD days tomorrow and Tuesday, so I’ll be home free after that. Although I miss my students, I am excited to get a break and do a few things like…</p> <a name='more'></a> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-AF1aXfs5zQ4/U4JbwLvax1I/AAAAAAAACjE/0lgYB5tZjSQ/s1600-h/image%25255B7%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zuBGVqQBndU/U4Jbyh1qD8I/AAAAAAAACjM/FogKKVcSjmc/image_thumb%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="596"></a></p> <p>1. Go to a nice beach: I live near the coast but the beaches here are not as pretty as the picture above of a beach in Florida. I went to Panama City Beach years ago and I loved being near the beach. I need my husband to take me…like, right now!</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-5hY7loNAt58/U4Jb0DZ6bJI/AAAAAAAACjU/jzZV7TWiHcM/s1600-h/image%25255B16%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fRvhMVbI7ro/U4Jb1GVa-sI/AAAAAAAACjc/l0dHwOCtueM/image_thumb%25255B17%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="441"></a></p> <p>2. Try out my Pinterest recipes: I have pinned so many delicious recipes on Pinterest but I can never find the time (except maybe on weekends) to try them. My goal is to try a new recipe every other week. My mom loves to try new recipes too so she’ll be my advisor and guinea pig.</p> <p><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" src="http://www.fatwallet.com/static/attachments/387680_cinemark.jpg" width="805" height="469"></p> <p>3. Go to the movies: Life with a baby, work, and a husband with a busy work schedule leaves little room for going out on dates…(aww, insert sad face here). I just told my husband that he needs to take me on a few dates. We love going to the movies, so I’m hoping that since one of us has slowed down a bit we can visit this place a little more often.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-umUwxv9UAjM/U4Jb2RupFqI/AAAAAAAACjk/rowDmZnZmZ4/s1600-h/image%25255B28%25255D.png"><img title="image" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-eNeoqlL7ih0/U4Jb3Wt2oZI/AAAAAAAACjs/qCr-b5Tcfv8/image_thumb%25255B32%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="455"></a></p> <p>4. Work on TpT products: This is a big one for me because I have so many ideas that I started, but haven’t been able to finish. I want to crank out these products to get teachers ready for the new school year.</p> <p>5. Have a successful kids camp: This year, I will be trying (again) to teach a few classes at our local college.Every year, they hold a kids college where kids can take classes on a variety of leisure subjects (cooking, dance) and also school subjects. I tried at another college last year, but it didn’t quite work out. I’m teaching a kindergarten readiness class, an iPad class, and a reader’s theatre class. I’m excited, but nervous.</p> <p><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" src="http://imagesci.com/img/2013/04/black-babies-sleeping-15406-hd-wallpapers.jpg" width="805" height="539"></p> <p>6. Sleep in: I mean, this is pretty self-explanatory. And yes, I do plan on sleeping just like a baby! </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-JrElCry80Ro/U4Jb34PC9II/AAAAAAAACj0/JjTDBa9OnLQ/s1600-h/IMG_3186%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_3186" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_3186" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--3R7Q-h3jMA/U4Jb4fh3hqI/AAAAAAAACj8/meFXTlS54DQ/IMG_3186_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="805" height="564"></a></p> <p>7. Spend more time with my baby: He’s growing up so fast! He’ll be two in a few months. He loves being out and about, so we’ll spend some mommy-son time together throughout the summer. Aww, that’s him as a newborn. Look at his little toes!</p> <p> <center><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" src="http://weknowmemes.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/i-forgot-to-post-on-facebook-i-was-going-to-the-gym.jpg"></center> <p>8. Work out more: I have been on-again and off-again with working out. This summer I will have more time to devote to working out on my elliptical in my home. I have also used My Fitness Pal with much success, but if I’m going to be cooking my Pinterest recipes I’ll have to throw that out of the window. I think the main thing is that I need daily exercise of some sort to keep the weight off. Also, I can have the occasionally unhealthy meal, as long as it’s not every day.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-N0vmIM5Rk7Y/U4Jb5OrE9TI/AAAAAAAACkE/Lr5AQS2SRh4/s1600-h/IMG_5937%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_5937" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_5937" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Gl1J8AiM7Qk/U4Jb5wZcGlI/AAAAAAAACkI/z3RjY3ktmyU/IMG_5937_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="805" height="569"></a></p> <p>9. Visit with my peeps: This is a picture of my mom and my best friend during my bridal photo shoot a few years ago. My mom and I stay in the same area, and she and I like to do lunch dates anytime that I have inservice days or days of while school is going on. Now that summer is here, we can have more lunch dates together. The other person in this picture is my best friend. She moved two hours away last year, and I miss her. I hope that we can have a girls weekend this summer.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Dj3xP_8DFyM/U4Jb6fhSosI/AAAAAAAACkU/oDeg1lMmdVk/s1600-h/IMG_8893%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_8893" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_8893" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-CFNQpB-nMbk/U4Jb7eA_flI/AAAAAAAACkc/78f7A7vkim0/IMG_8893_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="805" height="560"></a></p> <p>10. Spend more time with my husband: I saved the best for last. As I mentioned before, we are both super busy all the time, and I just want us to have more “us” time while I’m off this summer.</p> <p>Those are my top ten things I want to do this summer. Make sure you check out my TpT store tomorrow. My entire store will be on sale to celebrate Memorial Day!</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOtfuJ5A2KqTnWb9feHNofialDFEUXTYXjVE5xYDFAEZSOdX05nWzNsg8IP7_Az3iypWF2puNfq1zdece0kml9le5zXlliA9dAoFkFWlFAWN_g7hqj9oQrEv4v1SZiLGIvlVZ-Vps7Oyw/s1600-h/signature%25255B3%25255D.png"><img title="signature" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="signature" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-9vDGuKKXt0w/U4Jb8Tb-FYI/AAAAAAAACks/_wXsyALvi6M/signature_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="240" height="59"></a></p> Jasminehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10820648971232448087noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4984166201435367987.post-41663435349112661142014-05-22T15:14:00.000-07:002014-05-25T16:10:27.679-07:00Pin Up Thursdays Linky Party (May 22)<a href="http://www.buzzthreetimes.blogspot.com/search/label/pinup%20thursdays/"><img alt="pinupthursdayswithmrsmcclain_button_" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--ltHZt-3B8M/U352tWcvJlI/AAAAAAAACec/VmAGkRz9q6g/pinupthursdayswithmrsmcclain_button_%25255B3%25255D.png?imgmax=800" height="368" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="pinupthursdayswithmrsmcclain_button_" width="805" /></a><br />Pin Up Thursdays is a weekly linky party where you share four interesting educational finds from Pinterest. After viewing pictures online, I realized I totally did this part wrong. You are supposed to pull the metal section out from the entire pencil sharpener, and not keep it in like I did. It still worked perfectly, but it probably took me longer to sharpen this pencil.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-vqPqRDwAFOY/U3qOlWl0X1I/AAAAAAAACdk/cgy8_ESIDdI/s1600-h/ps9%25255B6%25255D.png"><img title="ps9" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="ps9" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg91b2QIKsvOA1u_omSO4GWNZpXhmK7WsjCqiTQWVKGXcgTZqQv7KH0oaAOdFluHDqtYRrYaItjO-vb8Lr0JPopckVnabL3YZTcsLclJC1rGsff57neByRSLaVQRjAegoN1p-L7VZ6gxOg/?imgmax=800" width="805" height="1109"></a></p> <p>And voila!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-z7vG77R2VvU/U3qOsAkBMgI/AAAAAAAACd0/YMTsF4yyBnM/s1600-h/ps10%25255B9%25255D.png"><img title="ps10" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="ps10" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-XyPb3cTtZHA/U3qOwfr2CnI/AAAAAAAACd8/GUu3QlSTJAs/ps10_thumb%25255B7%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="1009"></a></p> <p>I can not refute the claims that this is the quietest classroom pencil. It sharpened very smoothly and with no noise. I have an extremely loud electric sharpener that I use to sharpen pencils each day, but I will leave this one out for my kids to use during the day if they need it. It is a temporary tattoo that you draw on a child’s arm. I assume that applying the Skin Shield (I have never heard of this!!) prevents the writing from coming off in water. It’s so bad that I find myself turning to Disney Junior even when the baby is not around. Seriously?! </p> <p>Loving: It’s such a true statement that teachers are more excited about holidays and summer than the students. It’s not that we don’t love our job, it’s just that we put our hearts and souls into it for 9 months and at the end we are exhausted. All of the mom’s know how it gets when you were in the 9th month of pregnancy…it’s like get this baby out of me! For teacher’s it’s like get ME <em>and </em>these students out of here!</p> <p>Thinking: This week I will DIBELS testing students in our school for two days. The next day, I have a day-long professional development event. I hate being out of the class that long because the kids get a little wild. And at this time, with the school year winding down, I need a couple of more grades. I can’t do that if I’m not in the room…sigh.</p> <p>Wanting: Don’t we all need some extra cash?</p> <p>Needing: My car is so dirty, and it’s white. Enough said.</p> <p>Surprise: I have two wonderful blogging friends that I’d like for you to check out. The first is Sarah Mackey at <a href="http://mackeysclassroom.blogspot.com/"><font color="#f79646">Mackey’s Classroom</font></a>. Sarah was like the first person that I really connected with when I started blogging and we’ve been talking ever since. The second person is Misty at <a href="http://www.krazyaboutteaching.blogspot.com/"><font color="#f79646">Krazy About Teaching</font></a>. Misty is a wonderful teacher and blogger from my area. We’ve met only once, but I feel like we’re good friends already. She has so many awesome ideas especially involving technology. </p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-XqlUovSfeqE/U2ZwOy3UfJI/AAAAAAAACXo/5vIRTdmVHsU/s1600-h/sale_300_300%252520%2525281%252529%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img title="sale_300_300 (1)" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="sale_300_300 (1)" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-w0_q2mcRzW0/U2ZwQFtQ1BI/AAAAAAAACX0/eIcVav4PbyA/sale_300_300%252520%2525281%252529_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="240" height="240"></a></center> <p>Don’t forget to stop by my TpT store May 6th and 7th because I will be participating in the sitewide Teacher’s Appreciation Sale. As a Louisiana teacher, I’ll put in my two cents about this issue.</p> <a name='more'></a> <p>When Common Core was introduced in my state and parish during the 2012-2013, I only knew about because there were so many TpT Common Core products. Other than that, I had no clue what it was. During my first year doing CC, it was rather difficult. I honestly do not feel like we had adequate training before we were asked to implement it in our instruction. Like many of the protestors in the news story I mentioned above, I felt like CC was just thrown at us. Fast forward to this current school year, and I felt much more confident in implementing CC. We had many professional development days before and during the school year where we unpacked the standards to get a better understanding of what our students were supposed learn. So, I felt more comfortable about CC, but unfortunately my kids were not really grasping the concepts. Parents were not too happy either. I found myself telling parents, “Well, as you know, the Common Core standards are very rigorous…” and I received some blank stares and some head nods. Needless to say, many parents were not happy, many kids were confused, and this teacher was/has been/is scratching her head.</p> <p>I will say that I believe that CC is great way to make sure students in one state are learning the same things students in another state are. And let’s just put it out there, Louisiana does not rate too highly when it comes to education. I think our governor had good intentions, but the methods were all wrong. I do believe that CC was pushed too quickly. Teachers were not given enough time to understand the new standards before they were asked to begin using them. When teachers and parents began getting angry, “people” started back peddling and tried to give us training. It was just very backwards. Again, I am just stating my opinions about it.</p> <p>I am not sure what the future holds for Louisiana and CC, but I do know that a lot of teachers and parents are very unhappy. It will be interesting to see. I’d like to know your views on Common Core. How is it working in your state/county/parish? Were you adequately prepared to teach Common Core standards? How did your students grasp the Common Core standards? (Sidenote: I am SOOO excited for Spring break…even more than my students!) Today, we did an activity that I just added to my TpT store called Egg-Cellent Graphing.</p> <a name='more'></a> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-XoWMrkfhlAA/U0yHaHaw4SI/AAAAAAAACQk/Lcl8K__nWhg/s1600-h/egg2_buzzingwithmrsmcclain%25255B10%25255D.png"><img title="egg2_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="egg2_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-EFbjWvbm4dU/U0yHc45GrbI/AAAAAAAACQs/yBw3d7BxNRw/egg2_buzzingwithmrsmcclain_thumb%25255B8%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="869"></a></p> <p>We practice graphing all year long so even though we haven’t reached the Go Math! unit on graphing, I knew my first graders could still complete this activity. First they colored their eggs.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-VFgEwxvhqg0/U0yHfExGZmI/AAAAAAAACQ0/mHw62wPnkzo/s1600-h/egg3_buzzingwithmrsmcclain%25255B10%25255D.png"><img title="egg3_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="egg3_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-OeDFi0P0Kn8/U0yHhx0Oj1I/AAAAAAAACQ8/iWY3QLiL9H4/egg3_buzzingwithmrsmcclain_thumb%25255B8%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="993"></a></p> <p>Then, they cut their eggs out and sorted them by color.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-4JL-HAE1kFE/U0yHkGvrFVI/AAAAAAAACRE/MdvHfh2xZl0/s1600-h/egg5_buzzingwithmrsmcclain%25255B10%25255D.png"><img title="egg5_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="egg5_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-JV1DgfY-rjk/U0yHnCYKeoI/AAAAAAAACRM/CHUTMmCv_zo/egg5_buzzingwithmrsmcclain_thumb%25255B8%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="1070"></a></p> <p>Finally, the students colored in their graphs depending on how many eggs they had of each color. Do you GoNoodle? GoNoodle has a large collection of brain breaks that you can do in the classroom. It is free for teachers to sign up too which makes it even better!</p> <a name='more'></a> <p>In the picture above, my class was doing Zumba to the song “I Like to Move It” and they LOVED IT! They also love Boogie Down with the dancing chicken.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-E3uI0851ewY/U0q7L9ZjPqI/AAAAAAAACPM/usytvwKoGTk/s1600-h/go%252520noodle1_buzzingwithmrsmcclain%25255B8%25255D.png"><img title="go noodle1_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="go noodle1_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kFhqQb13x70/U0q7NF7N-RI/AAAAAAAACPU/xQ7r6VQAOk4/go%252520noodle1_buzzingwithmrsmcclain_thumb%25255B6%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="807" height="454"></a></p> <p>Once you sign in, you’ll get to choose an avatar for your classroom and you will be brought to this screen. They would be such a motivational tool for the classroom. My first graders love to talk (usually about things that have nothing to do with what we are learning at that time…but, that’s ok lol). These can now be a way for them to work hard so that they <em>can</em> talk about something that has to do with school.</p> <p> </p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-BntrcbO0j6Y/U0YqWnNpuZI/AAAAAAAACNo/CZsmfC7TCKg/s1600-h/pinnumberthree6.png"><img title="pinnumberthree" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="pinnumberthree" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-6_asClCpyoo/U0YqXDJEl5I/AAAAAAAACNw/_CHqiPTnlKA/pinnumberthree_thumb4.png?imgmax=800" width="318" height="102"></a></center> <div align="center"><a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/142918988147193311/"><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="work boxes, have one for each student, when they finish their work they can go to their work box and pull out things to work on that the teacher has placed in there. You can put items in each student’s box based on what their needs are. I guess you could also use these in place of the expensive mailboxes. I have a wooden one that is very sturdy but it costs a pretty penny. Both uses would be great for the classroom.</p> <p> </p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ZRjU3LzAG6Y/U0YqYp1gqSI/AAAAAAAACN0/h9_WI-B_V1g/s1600-h/pinnumberfour6.png"><img title="pinnumberfour" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="pinnumberfour" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0gYc1Rr98_w/U0YqZe4xHjI/AAAAAAAACOA/gKfUmr2rdKU/pinnumberfour_thumb4.png?imgmax=800" width="318" height="102"></a></center> <center> </center> <center><a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/703756163620918/"><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" src="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/34/e6/db/34e6dba8e2346083d2214c39a79ceb23.jpg" width="396" height="416"></a></center> <p>Sorry for the blurry picture for this pin, but it is sooo what I’ve been looking for! I’ve been on a search for Easter activities for my kiddos, and I found this pin that I’d like to try. These are mystery eggs, and your students must make inferences about what is inside after they get three clues. Once all of your students make a guess, you get to open the eggs and reveal what is inside. Such fun!</p> <p> </p><!-- start InLinkz script --> <div id="391614" class="InLinkzContainer"><a title="click to view in an external page." href="http://new.inlinkz.com//luwpview.php?id=391614" rel="nofollow">An InLinkz Link-up</a></div><script type="text/javascript" src="http://static.inlinkz.com/cs2.js?v=007"></script><!-- end InLinkz script --> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Ta_2Sm9wc-k/U0YqZ_gvkRI/AAAAAAAACOE/zu04U3Us1bE/s1600-h/signature3.png"><img title="signature" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="signature" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-JzpZZNmNUqA/U0Yqarn0HfI/AAAAAAAACOM/5XcyHhllY80/signature_thumb1.png?imgmax=800" width="240" height="59"></a></p> Jasminehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10820648971232448087noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4984166201435367987.post-19798795788559658872014-04-08T16:57:00.000-07:002014-05-25T16:10:27.939-07:00Let Me Re-Introduce Myself…<p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje0lAbn_bT3wQNEi2FAI75clVbcZZKUwRTBJYvgvtKHWinuDjrumN9ifvhEBDk8tuACtPv3rh9ViG7lH6qCR0TwfQJXS1eqZKIq_uEshQeez_RiPgtzpHSzJ4OpHegov4ZeCo1JSyIvVo/s1600-h/pinupthursdayswithmrsmcclain_button%25255B11%25255D.png"><img title="pinupthursdayswithmrsmcclain_button" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="pinupthursdayswithmrsmcclain_button" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-qrYIPyF_iow/U0SM5HEOnYI/AAAAAAAACLw/Ky7IbGwSagk/pinupthursdayswithmrsmcclain_button_thumb%25255B14%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="356"></a></p> <p>Okay, so I’m not re-introducing myself, but I am re-introducing Pin Up Thursdays. I started doing Pin Up Thursdays back in 2012 to share my interesting educational finds on Pinterest. I still write posts about it, but not as often as I should. At one point it was also a link party, but it didn’t really catch on…*sniffles*. So, I am going to give it another try!</p> <a name='more'></a> <p>I’ll use this post as reference for future Pin Up Thursdays. You can see my older Pin Up Thursday posts by clicking on the yellow Pin Up Thursdays tab on the right-hand side of the site. <strike>You’d think I’d be doing it more seeing as there is a whole section dedicated to it!</strike></p> <p>So, here’s what you do: During the week, pin anything interesting that you find on Pinterest. It could be a craft, an activity, an app, ANYTHING! Pinterest is so cool for teachers because there are zillions (yes, zillions) of teachers sharing a plethora of ideas from their classrooms. My pinboards are full of things that I want to make for my classroom, try in my classroom, or buy for my classroom. If you’re having trouble finding things, I would suggest that you find a few collaborative boards to follow. You can also search Pinterest using keywords like “classroom ideas.”</p> <p>Here’s a little bit more information for you:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-6hc3Y-FTD6k/U0SM5w61zuI/AAAAAAAACL4/bsM11s0wYGA/s1600-h/howtoplay_pinupthursdays%25255B12%25255D.png"><img title="howtoplay_pinupthursdays" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="howtoplay_pinupthursdays" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtWGuADdXKDWg4NkjZ24WCQyjnnCgY7QkPbd9XfutVdNQYV1yJ1pfkIOYDbvopdyqkylsRgthZe3APvOv8CyxKKn-yRMjNg0Ypq17HvOrev8nSBHKPxsAOEGYryQaVQr3L7GDZ7aWbtAE/?imgmax=800" width="805" height="785"></a></p> <p>I will host this linky party each Thursday, and I sure hope that you’ll join me.</p> <p>Now go forth and find your pins and tell some of your friends that Mrs. McClain is hosting a new/old linky party on Thursdays!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ALubudmNWpo/U0SM7sCJd7I/AAAAAAAACME/nwBl8qQpGFg/s1600-h/signature%25255B3%25255D.png"><img title="signature" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="signature" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ia-JGhuOkhM/U0SM8Re_q1I/AAAAAAAACMQ/iTdt7gUVxtU/signature_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="240" height="59"></a></p> Jasminehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10820648971232448087noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4984166201435367987.post-46425208438162158652014-04-02T21:06:00.000-07:002014-05-25T16:10:27.970-07:00Linking Up: Currently & New Products<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiapWg5-D-vgim1-9iVjbxCKA7ajBb3AC0rYzkLgs6KRT2Ije08iD7X4Zru7m77iXe02AxevA9_o2MCHb1gnjadstKkax0rGp5eemrr6sdxc2wzaA8isX8Se1yHWYv54PkrVFKde8LnG_I/s1600-h/currentlyteaser%25255B16%25255D.png"><img alt="currentlyteaser" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0pwbPW_RQzw/UzzeHo2uooI/AAAAAAAACJY/GLp1nrArfiU/currentlyteaser_thumb%25255B14%25255D.png?imgmax=800" height="271" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="currentlyteaser" width="805" /></a><br />I’m linking up with <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/"><span style="color: #ffc000;">Farley</span></a> again for Currently, so here goes…<br /><a name='more'></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-cPQs0YHg_GQ/UzzeJXARTiI/AAAAAAAACJg/pQuxIRJpXsk/s1600-h/currentlyapril_buzzingwithmrsmcclain%25255B7%25255D.png"><img alt="currentlyapril_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS4n0slM0OO8JlRMQCoZEgRVFLFxZ2rE6q01F0Rh04fCs9Um55yaajsaIv5-oniqIxQHmtoTXq_QVh5ikPSqBFDe3Zstbo66FfMg2btyGWmnfidMDk33HtODiIa7t4NDZeCIEmAJLoy-g/?imgmax=800" height="1121" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="currentlyapril_buzzingwithmrsmcclain" width="805" /></a><br />I have some cool new products in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Jasmine-Mcclain"><span style="color: #f79646;">TpT store</span></a> as well. Seriously, Louisiana is a unique state! This past week, I was fortunate to attend our parish’s technology showcase. Each year, teachers from schools in the parish are invited to other schools to see how they incorporate technology in their classrooms. It is a two day event, and each day you visit three different schools. This was my second time attending, and it was an awesome experience (I took a ton of pics…my iPad threw them up below!) </p> <a name='more'></a> <p>The only downside is that I can’t really come back to my school and use the coolest technologies that I see because they mostly involve iPads…sigh. But I have gained many ideas for WHEN I get some for my room. (Sidenote: I do have one iPad in my classroom, but it is like the FIRST iPad that was ever made. It can be kinda glitchy at times, it can only update to a certain point, and it doesn’t have a camera at all. My kids basically use it to take AR tests. Sorry to take such a big hiatus from blogging. I’ve been in the midst of dealing with health issues, wrangling my active child, and trying to live this teacher life! </p> <p>I have a quick post for today, and it is about AR or Accelerated Reader. I must admit, my school doesn’t push AR too much and as a result I don’t either. That’s my teacher confession of the day. I know that some teachers love it or hate it. I genuinely want my students to read more, especially considering that I am a first grade teacher. So, I’m going to keep better track of my students’ progress. I know you may be thinking, “Why are you starting this so late in the year though?” Well…I figure better late than never. </p> <a name='more'></a> <p>I decided that I should take this slowly, and I am going to start by using a tracking sheet. You see, some of my students weren’t taking tests AT ALL during the week. (Again, bad teacher!) I create this simple, non-frilly, non-graphic-filled (is this a word?) tracking sheet. It literally took me 3 seconds to make but it is a great way to get started. Students simply fill in the circle that corresponds to their number (each student has a number in the classroom based on alphabetical order) after they take an AR test. </p> <p>So by using this tracking sheet, I make sure that each student tests at least once each week. It also serves as a visual for my students. If they haven’t filled in a circle yet, they know that they need to test on a book. If they have filled in a circle, they know that they have taken a test. My next task is to create a visual for tracking the amount of points the students earn. Hopefully I will find a great system so that I can start the next school year off right.</p> <p>Do you have any ideas for tracking when students take AR tests or tracking students’ points? Please share! I’m leaving the tracking chart that I created below in a Google Doc for you to grab for free. If you can’t get the imbedded file, just grab it <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8O7ekIyf_04Qmx1b193ZjdOS0k/edit?usp=sharing"><font color="#ffc000">here</font></a>. I recently created a new product for my store where my students wrote silly Santa stories. My kids just loved it!</p> <a name='more'></a> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Who-Knew-Santa-Was-Silly-Christmas-Themed-Silly-Santa-Story-1015895"><img title="whoknew_mrsmcclain" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="whoknew_mrsmcclain" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-1O6ueypPkQc/UqkjBaRUXvI/AAAAAAAAB-k/-3VFY4p9g6Y/whoknew_mrsmcclain%25255B9%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="629"></a></p> <p>I just uploaded my newest product, <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Who-Knew-Santa-Was-Silly-Christmas-Themed-Silly-Santa-Story-1015895"><font color="#ffc000">Who Knew Santa Was Silly?</font></a> in my TpT store. It includes lesson plans for a week with activities for your students to brainstorm ideas, create their silly stories, and to compare real Santa and silly Santa. My students completed these activities last week.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-lHkW9ig_kjg/UqkjDFQQwAI/AAAAAAAAB-s/VkG04diPlsc/s1600-h/bstshee%25255B20%25255D.png"><img title="bstshee" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="bstshee" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-oMUVQdz2jLQ/UqkjGRGVMfI/AAAAAAAAB-0/NmPTlO8JFu0/bstshee_thumb%25255B16%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="1142"></a></p> <p>We started by brainstorming ideas using the brainstorming sheet. I didn’t tell the students what they were writing about…this added to the fun! Next, we transferred our brainstorming ideas to the rough draft copy of the silly story. This is where the students could actually read their stories. They loved this part! We then revised our rough drafts (most spelling errors) and created our final drafts. These were the ones that I used on my bulletin board. You’ll notice in the picture above that I made a mistake in my initial creation of this product (I fixed it before it was posted in my store, of course). So, my kids had to scratch out and re-number their brainstorming sheet. Silly me!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Tas8Gc2y2fo/UqkjHlwYXJI/AAAAAAAAB-4/S3ACjPCS4JQ/s1600-h/whoknew2_mrsmcclain%25255B6%25255D.png"><img title="whoknew2_mrsmcclain" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="whoknew2_mrsmcclain" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-be7PSIACDdY/UqkjIu1jVrI/AAAAAAAAB_E/LFxplQxPszg/whoknew2_mrsmcclain_thumb%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="634"></a></p> <p>After completing our final drafts of our silly Santa story. We used the comparing and contrasting sheet and Venn Diagram above to discuss real Santa and silly Santa. Again, another fun activity for them!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-gvmkgqf8FHw/UqkjKgNcF3I/AAAAAAAAB_M/0pHXjSiUqe4/s1600-h/IMG_0667%25255B7%25255D.png"><img title="IMG_0667" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_0667" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aIWmnaaxct8/UqkjMzvPBNI/AAAAAAAAB_U/wcCaoDIJUJw/IMG_0667_thumb%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="626"></a></p> <p>In my newest product, I also have an idea about how to turn your students’ writing activities into a bulletin board display. I started by finding this cute Santa template on <a href="http://www.catchingfireflies.com/blog/2012/12/super-cute-christmas-photo-booth-props/">Catching Fireflies</a>. Then I created eyes and noses for Santa using construction paper.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIXZfEgoYXxC5F2ZO7Kj6gZ41c19rTdy_SJqApZn2UJvFyuZ0IPPuTAI5d8Iwm81xQaYHWMFsGbnDzmEX9O5bq4GT3skDAObceKgp4p7WzZbh5zZ-foyYAmr0HphoVfSU1OZ1M8iNHrb0/s1600-h/IMG_0668%25255B7%25255D.png"><img title="IMG_0668" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_0668" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-qb7wJyZVDsk/UqkjR2wURRI/AAAAAAAAB_k/exbHwmvozY0/IMG_0668_thumb%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="621"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-3o5hCj5lke8/UqkjUEK7rLI/AAAAAAAAB_s/uPVmB5jvP0o/s1600-h/IMG_0669%25255B7%25255D.png"><img title="IMG_0669" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_0669" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-sLWCFKz3YyY/UqkjWjXDuHI/AAAAAAAAB_0/-YE-iCoM0Dk/IMG_0669_thumb%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="630"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-gpnjFLC6ws8/UqkjZDUf6iI/AAAAAAAAB_8/b20k1NdjExg/s1600-h/IMG_0671%25255B8%25255D.png"><img title="IMG_0671" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_0671" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-0wwEjWtVaYw/Uqkjbh0StBI/AAAAAAAACAE/c3wxByXM9cc/IMG_0671_thumb%25255B6%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="630"></a></p> <p>I put all of the pieces together to create Santa!</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-4FGr6YnrunQ/Uqkjd0ViKYI/AAAAAAAACAM/4CYKk_aLQV4/s1600-h/IMG_0673%25255B8%25255D.png"><img title="IMG_0673" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_0673" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvI3Jf2Mb_JfU9nlclq3RucuNt6f6TTGmSqgwm7ikh7e4dCHZZ2K7oBNdWHUU-UYbiLsqiYJ6nc7nrIPxFCnqJT-pElMkrNzdr1QBVgnaSSuftPUYQ0McAxY9GGcDVEBxcdq_dluWvDRk/?imgmax=800" width="805" height="626"></a></p> <p>I used the students’ final draft of their silly stories and their Santa craft and added them to my bulletin board.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-L9pTQWc4drk/UqkjjeD68vI/AAAAAAAACAc/_o3F8YWDL0Y/s1600-h/IMG_0674%25255B10%25255D.png"><img title="IMG_0674" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_0674" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-z6M6XygxOoE/Uqkjl7t_qEI/AAAAAAAACAk/4oKVAfh5LuU/IMG_0674_thumb%25255B8%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="637"></a></p> <p>Go check out my newest product in my store. Today I’m linking up with <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/"><font color="#ffc000">Farley</font></a> for Currently, and I am also sharing a classroom freebie.</p> <a name='more'></a> <p>Here’s my Currently for November…enjoy!</p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-wLDrJT222V0/UnahNRDdyoI/AAAAAAAAB6o/SRqVZfLJciA/s1600-h/novembercurrently.jpg%25255B14%25255D.png"><img title="novembercurrently.jpg" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="novembercurrently.jpg" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ECQk6e-MsxE/UnahPqT-1NI/AAAAAAAAB6w/KDDducG_-FM/novembercurrently.jpg_thumb%25255B12%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="805" height="1117"></a></center> <p>I am currently listening to the Hobbit and the Lorax. I’m watching the Hobbit and little man is watching the Lorax, but I can hear it. It is seriously his favorite movie and he’s just a baby. I am currently loving the extra hour of sleep due to DST. I feel like I have a lot of time to do things today. The downside is that it’ll get darker earlier. I am currently thinking that I need to finish grading papers. I think that is a #teacherproblem! I am currently wanting a new car. I think that I have outgrown my small car, and I need to step up to an SUV. I’m thinking…a Ford Explorer? One of the first vehicles I drove as a teenager was an OLD Explorer, but they look so fancy now! I am currently needing a personal assistant. Don’t we all! A yummy pin was not hard to find. I love Pinterest and I have a whole board dedicated to <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/JasMcClain/food/"><font color="#ffc000">food</font></a> (sad, but true). So, I just picked one of my faves.</p> <p> <center><img style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="Pioneer Woman's Baked French Toast" src="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/59/32/c9/5932c996f183f9c578116353ad3cf90d.jpg" width="805" height="623"></center> <p>It’s Baked French Toast by the Pioneer Woman! YUM. You can find website with the recipe from the original pinner <a href="http://mormonmavens.blogspot.com/2011/11/baked-french-toast.html"><font color="#ffc000">here</font></a>, and you can find the original recipe from the Pioneer Woman <a href="http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2012/08/baked-french-toast/"><font color="#ffc000">here</font></a>. </p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-4aqqzfzomGM/UnahQhwb6kI/AAAAAAAAB64/KQ81eUM3Wfs/s1600-h/IMG_1283%25255B1%25255D%25255B12%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1283[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_1283[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-BbgJaDYzZ_o/UnahRlO1fWI/AAAAAAAAB7A/vloKqUF4r9M/IMG_1283%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B14%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="805" height="779"></a></center> <p>So, In my classroom, during center rotations, I have student that is designated as the center monitor. During our rotations, I am at my teacher table, and the other students are in their centers. If a student has a question, they know that they must ask the center monitor. Sometimes the monitor can answer the question and sometimes the center monitor has to ask me. My students know that the center monitor is the only person that is allowed to come to my teacher table to ask a question. Well…it had been working fine, but I noticed that I was answering TONS of questions during our rotations. Many of these questions could wait until later, or the students should have known what to do. Another problem is that my center monitor would be working so hard in their center that they would forget to look up and see who was raising their hands for help. So, I had to constantly call the monitor’s name to go help people. Ultimately, I wasn’t giving my small group the attention they needed and that is a big problem. To remedy this problem, I created these center monitor statement cards.</p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-DSHhXHCCNzg/UnahSWOVNVI/AAAAAAAAB7w/jGUvsIKM60o/s1600-h/IMG_1281%25255B1%25255D%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1281[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_1281[1]" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOjYxB7V-_xInkwQ7qWLiwLjuQ2H5x3NY_ND_Y2o8Ot2_N48sYUe3O4Rwl0mbTwxHJZDJQuIWCYQ_wb4dGK9KxqMihWdGcAs6Sic3ySgDnP-ULxzjVuLMJzjGDi34I5X1UgjG8Y2TGfqk/?imgmax=800" width="805" height="1124"></a></center> <p>The cards have statements that the students can present to the center monitor. When they need the center monitor, they will choose a card and write their names on it. Then they will place the card in a special box that I gave to my monitor. The monitor will know that someone needs help, and she can go to him or her without me having to tell them. I also created this poster. I posted this poster in the area where I have the statement cards set up. And as the poster states, if my students have a question that is not on the cards, it can wait! I am going to be trying this out on Monday. I think it will really help me reduce the amount of time that I spend away from my teacher table. In the freebie, you will have all of the cards that I used above, and I’ve also included blank copies just in case you’d like to come up with your own. You can download this freebie <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8O7ekIyf_04SnZIYUZXMVI1ajg/edit?usp=sharing"><font color="#f79646">here</font></a> and please leave me some comment love if you enjoyed it!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ZW2Xky20Wc8/UnahTltHmoI/AAAAAAAAB7U/_qDAlhOHoeE/s1600-h/signature%25255B3%25255D.png"><img title="signature" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="signature" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ilx6JmGDzU0/UnahUGjkZXI/AAAAAAAAB7g/d14OuG7b3Hg/signature_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="240" height="59"></a></p> Jasminehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10820648971232448087noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4984166201435367987.post-29019080996857893742013-10-26T08:01:00.000-07:002014-05-25T16:10:28.141-07:00New Look & A Couple of Freebies<p> <center><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-WROZ6MsxPYA/UmvcyOrdIAI/AAAAAAAAB5k/miXFA0Px9Eg/s1600-h/IMG_1245%25255B34%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1245" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_1245" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-oylCIFJMTkU/UmvczCKHUwI/AAAAAAAAB5s/h4iuMQw_XSM/IMG_1245_thumb%25255B25%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="805" height="647"></a></center> <p>Good Saturday to you! I hope that you like my new design courtesy of Laura Rafferty at Sophie & Rory. She was so great to work with and I think it looks pretty cool. Lately I have been diving all the way into the Daily 5 and I have a few freebies to share with you. </p> <a name='more'></a> <p>This was my first year to implement the Daily 5, and I must say that I…LOVE IT! Honestly, I would dread when someone would come in during my Reading time and Math time because I didn’t know how to engage my students. I have literally been searching for an effective way to implement centers since I started teaching, and the Daily 5 is it! Now, it does take a ton of work to get the students used to it. I still struggle from time to time. When that happens, I simply go back and model with my kids and practice again. I am hoping to post what I do for each of my Daily 5 math and reading centers soon. I am not an expert by any means, but I do have ideas to share! Today, I’m sharing what I use in my Math by Myself (Math Daily 5) center. Students have to complete seatwork first, then they can grab one of these activities. This chapter we are covering subtraction, so I created these two games. Our math series (Go Math) has games too, but I just wanted to create something myself.</p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-4C5-BbrQsTI/UmvkOiaOJ5I/AAAAAAAAB50/AR33GIaoaQ8/s1600-h/IMG_1245%25255B24%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1245" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_1245" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-I7c11HyjLkI/UmvkPV6ZJkI/AAAAAAAAB58/PkSZVQp1T8U/IMG_1245_thumb%25255B15%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="805" height="647"></a></center> <p>The first activity is Subtraction Cover Up. Students choose a card and solve the problem. When they find the difference, they will use a counter to cover it up. It’s simple, but my kids love it. I printed about 3 sets of this game, and I store them in a big gallon plastic bag. Also, I made sure to use foam counters! Kids are attracted to noise! I would also laminate the pieces. I didn’t get to do it initially because I rushed to make this, but I plan on laminating it later so that I can re-use it.</p> <p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-hCnlKvUOpaI/UmvkQBvxyqI/AAAAAAAAB6E/1zkT_ZjaGtQ/s1600-h/IMG_1246%25255B21%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1246" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_1246" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-skH-u30pfuM/UmvkQzFhvlI/AAAAAAAAB6M/CzXEQv74DV4/IMG_1246_thumb%25255B15%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="805" height="647"></a></p> <p>The other activity is Subtraction Roll and Solve. In this activity, students will first roll a die. The number that they roll will be the problem that they have to solve. Students will solve the subtraction sentence and place the card on the page. Each number on the die will allow the students to solve two subtraction sentences. Again, I made 3 sets and stored them in plastic bags. Also, foam dice are a must if you have them!</p> <p>These activities are nothing fancy, just something I came up with! Scoop up both activities <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8O7ekIyf_04YXp5cURUYi1YeFk/edit?usp=sharing"><font color="#ffc000">HERE</font></a> and leave me some feedback below! Enjoy your weekend.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Y3xnL-Wgbm0/UmvkRT1xqYI/AAAAAAAAB5M/IOQKZDKhxdU/s1600-h/signature%25255B3%25255D.png"><img title="signature" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="signature" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-hNK3PkhG7H0/UmvkRybUywI/AAAAAAAAB5Y/XajnLB7oS3M/signature_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="240" height="59"></a></p> Jasminehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10820648971232448087noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4984166201435367987.post-11291919219392523182013-09-13T19:14:00.000-07:002014-05-25T16:10:28.152-07:00Today, In My Classroom: Calendar Math<p> <center><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-mxbSteUdu5o/UjPGitNTwqI/AAAAAAAAB2Y/JpgjjvInzto/s1600-h/IMG_1112%25255B4%25255D%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1112[4]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_1112[4]" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-F61NkReGAGA/UjPGjNDLWXI/AAAAAAAAB2g/1Wwp2GPlpcY/IMG_1112%25255B4%25255D_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="319" height="440"></a></center> <p>This year, I wanted to re-vamp my calendar routine this year for my firsties. In the past, I have used a Promethean flipchart from Promethean Planet that I downloaded years ago. I still use it, but I use it in conjunction with my daily calendar math sheet.</p> <a name='more'></a> <p>The picture above shows what I project on my promethean board. This actually shows what it looks like after we have filled everything in. I let my students work with a partner to complete their calendar math. I usually set a timer so that they know that we don’t have time to play! (Also, they know that we have our Math Daily 5 centers following our math mini lesson, so they are pretty good about finishing).</p> <p> <center><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-8FK5t1cyDxs/UjPGjvvounI/AAAAAAAAB2o/mv3w25tISvU/s1600-h/IMG_1113%25255B1%25255D%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1113[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="IMG_1113[1]" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-VbHB5AODsro/UjPGkHhsaYI/AAAAAAAAB2w/LgRA7RUltDk/IMG_1113%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="354" height="399"></a></center> <p>After the timer goes off, we review our calendar. I honestly started this late this school year, but I plan to copy enough for each month and make a booklet out of it. I wish I could afford to run off enough for the entire year and bind them together! Maybe next year I can!</p> <p>Feel free to grab my daily calendar math sheet below or just click <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8O7ekIyf_04ZzVZZzdZOWswX3M/edit?usp=sharing"><font color="#f79646">here</font></a>!
